TLB1061 - Translation of the Bible: History and Theory I(ECTS 3 - sem. I)
Obiettivi didattici:
• To introduce students to the activity of Bible translation as a component of mission history and to trace its early developments. • To introduce developments in the theoretical framework of translation studies from the 1950’s-present day and locate the activity of Bible translation within this framework. • To introduce the types of Bible translations and the challenges translators must address as they translate the Bible in specific contexts.
Contenuti delle lezioni:
This is an introductory course that considers the translation of the Bible both as an aspect of the church’s mission history and as an activity that influences the shape of human culture. An overview of the early history of Bible translation (main concerns and assumptions) will create a context for understanding this activity within the current paradigm of translation studies and the diversity of audiences in the twenty-first century. Specific aspects of Bible translation will be considered along with strategies and translation types and the paradigms of translation studies in which they were developed. Through lecture and discussion of selected readings, developments in theory and practice will be introduced.
