Già annunciata da Giovanni Paolo II, dal 4 al 25 ottobre 2009 si è svolta la II Assemblea Speciale per l’Africa del Sinodo dei Vescovi. Dopo un’apposita consultazione, Papa Benedetto XVI ha voluto che tale assise affrontasse il tema: La Chiesa in Africa a servizio della riconciliazione della giustizia e della pace. “Voi siete il sale della terra… Voi siete la luce del mondo” (Mt 5,13.14). Molteplici sono le ragioni della sua importanza, non ultima la crescente rilevanza assunta dal dinamismo della Chiesa in Africa nell’orizzonte della Chiesa universale. Gli Atti di questo Sinodo costituiscono il primo strumento per conoscere il presente e il futuro della vita delle Chiese particolari in Africa (valori coltivati, difficoltà incontrate, aspirazioni, progetti ecc.). Il volume consente di seguire l’iter dei lavori sinodali, dal momento dell’annuncio del tema fino alla promulgazione dell’Esortazione Apostolica Postsinodale Africae Munus.
I contenuti sono distribuiti in sei sezioni:

1. Annuncio e preparazione del Sinodo (storia e significato dell’istituzione sinodale; i Lineamenta; lo Instrumentum laboris);
2. L’inizio del Sinodo: temi e problemi;
3. In ascolto dei Padri (le prime 14 Congregazioni Generali; la Relatio post Disceptationem);
4. Il frutto pastorale (Nuntius e Propositiones);
5. Il Sinodo come evento;
6. L’Esortazione Apostolica Postsinodale Africae Munus (consegnata alla Chiesa da Benedetto XVI nel novembre 2011).

Il Sinodo dei Vescovi è un’istituzione permanente fondata dal papa Paolo VI il 15 settembre 1965, con la Lettera Apostolica Apostolica sollicitudo, per mantenere viva l’esperienza collegiale che, raggiungendo la sua manifestazione più alta nel Concilio, rende i membri del Corpo episcopale partecipi in gerarchica comunione della sollecitudine della Chiesa universale. Si tratta di un organismo che, favorendo la comunione dei Vescovi tra loro e con il Romano Pontefice, aiuta il Vescovo di Roma con il consiglio per la salvaguardia e l’incremento della fede e dei costumi, come pure per l’osservanza e l’incremento della disciplina ecclesiastica, per lo scambio di informazioni ed esperienze, per la comune ricerca di soluzioni pastorali adeguate e per lo studio dei problemi riguardanti l’attività della Chiesa nel mondo.

The Second Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishops, which had been convoked by John Paul II, took place from the 4th to the 25th of October 2009. Following a specific consultation, Pope Benedict XVI decided the Synod to focus on: “The Church in Africa in service to reconciliation, justice and peace. "You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world" (Mt 5: 13-14). The Synod is significant on multiple grounds, not least the rising relevance of the African Church’s dynamism in the context of the Universal Church. The Synod’s Proceedings represent a fundamental tool to understand particular African Churches’ present and future life (promoted values, difficulties met, aspirations, projects). The volume leads the reader through the various stages of the synodal works from the announcement of the theme to the promulgation of the post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Africae Munus. The contents are divided into six sections

1) Announcement and process of preparation of the synodal Assembly (history and significance of the synodal institution; Lineamenta; Instrumentum laboris);

2) Opening of the Synod: themes and problems

3) Listening to the Fathers (the first 14th General Congregations; Relatio post Disceptationem);

4) The pastoral fruits (Nuntius and Propositiones)

5) The Synod as an event

6) The post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Africae Munus (delivered by the Holy Father Benedict XVI to the Church on November 2011).

The Synod of Bishops is a permanent Institution established by Pope Paul VI through the Apostolic Letter Apostolica Sollicitudo (15 September 1965), to keep alive the collegial spirit which reached its highest manifestation in the Council and makes all the members of the episcopal body in hierarchical communion partake of the solicitude for the universal Church. We are dealing with an Institution which promotes the spirit of communion uniting the Bishops with the Roman Pontiff and Bishops among themselves whose job is to aid in advising the Pope to safe-keeping and to increase faith and traditions, to maintain and confirm ecclesial disciplines, to share information and experiences in the common pursuit of adequate pastoral solutions and to study the problems concerning the Church's activities in the world.
