Che cosa è un testo sacro? Quali sono i criteri che definiscono un testo come “sacro”? Come si è formato il concetto di “canone” in riferimento ad un testo sacro e come viene interpretato nei diversi contesti religiosi? Che differenza esiste tra “demitizzazione” e “demitologizzazione? E quale ruolo assume il testo sacro nello sviluppo della vita religiosa e sociale dei credenti?

Sono queste solo alcune delle questioni affrontate nel volume, con il contributo di specialisti delle varie discipline, in una prospettiva interdisciplinare volta all’esame non solo dell’ambiente giudaico-cristiano e islamico ma anche delle forme religiose arcaiche che paiono oggi scomparse.

I temi legati all’origine del testo sacro, alla sua recezione, canonizzazione e interpretazione, nonché all’influsso che esercita tuttora sulla vita dei credenti sono quanto mai attuali e complessi. Ad essi è stato dedicato un importante convegno di studi, da cui il volume trae origine, che si è tenuto presso l’Università di Roma Tre (26-27 nov. 2004), promosso ed organizzato dai docenti di varie Università (Roma Tre, La Sapienza, Tor Vergata, Pontificia Università Urbaniana, Facoltà Valdese di Teologia, pontificio Istituto di Studi Arabi e di Islamistica)

Gaspare MURA is professor of Philosophy and Hermeneutics at the Pontifical Urbaniana and Lateranense Universities. He was director of the Superior Institute for the Study of the Non-belief, Religion and Cultures and is author of numerous publications about religious themes in contemporary culture.

What is a sacred text? What are the criteria that define a text as “sacred”? How did the concept of “canon” develop in reference to a sacred text? Further: what is the difference between “demythicizing” and “demythologizing” while interpreting a sacred text? What is the role of a sacred text in the religious and social life of the believers? Finally: does a sacred language exist and in what religious contexts?

These are only some of the many questions that the volume deals with. It draws on the contribution of experts of the various disciplines, in a interdisciplinary perspective that aims to examine not only the Jewish-Christian-Islamic environment, but also archaic religious forms that have now disappeared (Mesopotamia, Egypt, Persia, the Greek-Roman world up to the Manichean mazdeism), and yet who still constitute the remote paradigm of the hermeneutical relationship with the sacred text as it would develop in the future.

The themes connected to the origin of the sacred text, its reception, canonization and interpretation, as well as the influence on the life of believers are poignant and complex. This publication originates from a very important study convention held at Università di Roma Tre (26-27 Nov. 2004), promoted and organized by professors of various University (Roma Tre, La Sapienza, Tor Vergata, Pontifical Urbaniana University, Valdensian faculty of Theology, Pontifical Institute of Arabic and Islamite Studies). This volume gathers the various contributions in the plurality of inspiration and education of its authors. It is rich in historical-cultural information, reflections and precious suggestions for all those who want to deepen not only the connection between “hermeneutics” and “sacred text” in different religious contexts, but also the sense one should introduce in current interreligious dialogue.
