Il volume presenta gli Atti del Seminario di Aggiornamento per i Vescovi dei Territori di missione di recente consacrazione che si è tenuto al Collegio San Paolo, a Roma, dall’8 al 21 Settembre 2003. Hanno preso parte agli incontri, organizzati dalla Congregazione per l’Evangelizzazione dei Popoli, 170 Vescovi di lingua inglese provenienti da 36 paesi: 15 dall’Africa, 5 dal Nord e Centro America, 15 dall’Asia e 1 dall’Oceania.

Molti importanti aspetti teologici e pastorali sono stati affrontati da Cardinali e Arcivescovi di vari Dicasteri e da altri esperti e lo stesso Papa Giovanni Paolo II non ha fatto mancare il suo apporto a questo importante momento di comunione e di scambio d’esperienze. Di particolare significato la relazione del Card. Ratzinger sul tema della evangelizzazione delle culture, dove il futuro Papa Benedetto XVI traccia in una relazione magistrale la delicata relazione tra la proclamazione del Vangelo e le particolari realtà delle culture locali.

On September 8-21, 2003 the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples organised a Seminar at the Collegio San Paolo in Rome for recently-consecrated Bishops in Mission Territories. After the 1994 and 1997 courses, the Missionary Dicastery thought it was worthwhile repeating such an useful experience, especially because of the considerably increase in the number of recently appointed Bishops.

The talks in the present book, given by Cardinals and Archbishops heading various Dicasteries of the Roman Curia and also by some Bishops from Mission Territories and other experts, were ordered in a such a way as to present the Bishop’s Ministry in its various theological and pastoral aspects.

As Pope John Paul II said receiving the Seminar participants at the Audience in Castelgandolfo, this Updating Course was an important moment for the spiritual and pastoral renewal of these Bishops to continue their basic mission of transmitting the gift of faith and encouraging Christian communities to proclaim the Gospel. He exhorted them with these words: “No one is so poor to have nothing to give; no one so rich to have nothing to receive. May your soul hear every day the echo of the Redeemer’s exhortation: ‘Duc in altum’! This is an invitation to cast ‘spiritual nets’ into the sea of the world...”.
