4. The Bologna Process
In September 2003 the
Holy See joined the Bologna Declaration, i.e. an
agreement between the education systems of the European
countries envisaging a process of harmonisation of
university qualifications in order to foster cultural
exchange between university teachers and students.
Also the
Pontifical University Urbaniana, as other European
Ecclesiastical Universities, has decided to comply with
the criteria set out by the Bologna process, namely in
some specific frameworks:
- evaluation of
credits given to the courses according to a new system
that takes into account not only the hours of lesson but
the overall learning path (ects, European Credit
Transfer System);
- a document to be
joined to the Diploma (Diploma Supplement)
containing detailed information on the student’s
education path as well as on the learning and evaluation
processes leading to the academic degree;
- qualitative
evaluation process by the University as a whole
(Faculties, Services, professors, ect.) involving all
the academic community (students, teachers, staff,
etc.).
The Bologna
Process will be implemented step by step thus leading
the Urbaniana University to dialogue through a common
language with all the European university education
institutions and, hopefully, with a growing number of
countries in the world. From the
present academic year 2007/08 onward each course will be
given a number of credits according to the new criteria
(ects) and, upon student’s request, the Secretary Office
will deliver the Diploma Supplement. Furthermore, during
the year, the whole University will take part in the
internal self-evaluation process through questionnaires
and other tools aimed at measuring the quality standards
achieved and sketching out strategies to improve the
standards of education and the services provided in the
future.
Here and now we shall thank
all those who will help us reach the goals set by the
Bologna agreement and we are sure that this newly
implemented process will lead to improve the quality of
our university and will involve all its members in the
shaping of a truly European education system.
