Adherents.com
|
Description |
Preston Hunter's website Adherents.com is one of the most valuable tools available on the Internet for researchers needing statistical information on religious groups or organisations around the globe. The site is easily navigable and may be searched by either geographic location or religious affiliation. Though the bulk of information relates to American religious demographics, those digging for information will be hard pressed to find any belief system omitted, as virtually all-major cultures are included somewhere in these pages. Appropriate for students and academics at all levels, inquiries produce detailed information on various sects and denominations within a faith, their distribution, the number of adherents, the percentage of the population, and (when available) the number of congregations or churches. Thankfully, the editors have taken care to provide the source information for each entry and often a link to the referring page for electronically published data. Limited amounts of historical population statistics are also available through this site. The site features advertising but it is not obtrusive. |

African traditional religion
|
Description |
The 'African Traditional Religion' web pages maintained by Chidi Denis Isizoh are a general collection of resources on indigenous African cultures and beliefs, as well as their development both in Africa and in the African Diaspora. Through a series of articles, students and others with a general interest in African society are introduced to a number of social and religious issues including: women's role in religious rites; an examination of certain creation myths; and the function of marriage. There is also an interesting collection of papers tracking the interaction of native African religions with Christianity and Islam. For those writing papers of their own or furthering their research, a number of superior resources may be found here, including a bibliography of traditional African religion, and statistical information on religious adherence. The section on traditional religion in the African diaspora includes links to online resources on: voodoo; Orisha; Ifa; and Candoble. An extensive series of links to a wide variety of related topics (many from academic sources) will also assist research into any aspect of African culture. |

APCAT (ATLA preservation programm catalogue online)
|
Producer |
ATLA |
|
Description |
APCAT (the ATLA preservation programme's online catalogue) is a database offering bibliographic records of religious and theological serials, monographs, and archives. All items catalogued have been preserved on 35mm microfilm or microfiche, by or for the American Theological Library Association. The earliest works in the catalogue date from the 1600s, though the bulk of material is from the 19th and 20th centuries. For each title, details are given of: the author; the date of publication; the physical description of the work itself; the series to which the work belongs; the method of reproduction; and the ISBN. Other notes and a summary are also provided where appropriate and available. Additionally, each work is assigned one or more linked subject keywords: by clicking on these, users are automatically taken to a list of other records with related subject matter. The database can be searched by keywords, title, author, subjects, or ATLA number, and search results can be displayed in a variety of formats. The site also gives details of how copies of the works recorded can be obtained. |

Association of religion data archives (ARDA)
|
Period |
1946 - present |
|
Description |
The website of the Association of Religion Data Archives (ARDA) is an essential resource for students and academics researching or exploring religious trends and developments in the United States and elsewhere. Formerly known as the American Religion Data Archive, it was established to collect and preserve statistical information and reports on a host of religious organisations and issues. The project originally focused on religion in America, but has since expanded to include data about other countries. Information is categorised into national and regional assessments, with reports on religious denominations, and surveys of religious professionals. Research results from whole survey questionnaires may be downloaded from the site, and an extremely thorough search utility allows the user to scan the whole body of information for specific issues and then extract that information. It is even possible to conduct some limited comparisons from separate data files and collate the results. While not limited to the Judeo-Christian tradition, much of the information presently held is on Christian groups, with particularly good survey data available on Catholicism in America. The Archive is directed by Roger Finke. |

Bibliographic information base in patristics |
|
Description |
The Bibliographic Information Base in Patristics is a database system specialising in patristics. Although patristic literature remains its major preoccupation, the BIBP touches on all disciplines associated with patristic Christianity. The site allows readers to use the bibliographical services of the BIBP, thereby making available an online database that contains over 30,000 records from 325 journals relating to patristic studies and the history of early Christianity. The chief language of the site is French, though an introduction and a limited amount of other information is available in English. Presently, the search interface for the database is only in French; however, it is possible to search for English terms, and to limit the results by language (at time of writing, over 7,000 records referred to English language works). A number of indexes are also available in PDF format. |

Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Christianity
|
Producer |
Overseas Ministries Study Center (OMSC) |
|
Description |
Concern about this situation brought a group of China scholars to a consultation at the Overseas Ministries Study Center (OMSC), in New Haven, Connecticut, in October 2005 to consider how to narrow the gap between current reference materials and contemporary Chinese Christian demography. They decided to begin by founding the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Christianity, an electronic database modelled on the Dictionary of African Christian Biography (DACB). The BDCC is an electronic database containing the essential biographical facts of Chinese and foreign Christian missionaries, church leaders, evangelists, and laity chiefly responsible for laying the foundations and advancing the growth of Chinese Christian communities and their influence in societies around the world. While the database is widely inclusive of time periods and faith traditions, the distinctive focus of the project is on the lesser-known Chinese Christians of the modern era (1800 to 1950). An international team of scholars collaborates to facilitate the project. Contributors are drawn from academic, church, and mission communities in China, Asia and the West. The project aims to stimulate local data gathering from universities, churches, seminaries and colleges, and para-church agencies, with faculty members, graduate students, and organizational staff doing research and writing. With a solid base in academic expertise, the project nevertheless introduces the personal stories of grass-roots Chinese Christians and their communities in a lively writing style for a general audience. |

Bibliographies on Chinese history and culture
|
Producer |
Sinological Institute, University of Leiden, The Netherlands |
|
Description |
This truly superior online collection of citations and bibliographic material has been compiled by Barend J. ter Haar at the University of Leiden. The main introductory page of his Bibliographies on Chinese History and Culture leads to eight different extensive (and usually annotated) bibliographical resources on Chinese society. While this includes references for literacy and education, violence, and protest and dissent, many categories are specifically devoted to religious themes including the Yao religion, Shamanism, and the Falun Gong movement, as well as more general collections on twentieth century religious life and culture in mainland China. The bibliographies are organised in a series of logical sub-divisions, and include details of electronic resources. However, a basic search engine to retrieve references by author or exact subject would be a welcome addition to the site. In any case, undergraduates and academics at all levels who wish to enlarge their knowledge of Chinese secondary sources will find these lists useful, whether they are searching for books or material on the Web. New lecturers may also wish to avail themselves of the Teaching Aids section, which takes the form of an extended annotated exploration of Internet, encyclopaedic and print resources. |

Bibliography of western language publications on Chinese popular religion
|
Producer |
Universität Leipzig |
|
Description |
The Bibliography of Western Language Publications on Chinese Popular Religion (1995 to present) is an online listing of primarily English journal and book references, addressing a wide variety of geographical and cultural aspects from Oriental belief systems. Compiled by Philip Clart, Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Leipzig, the bibliography started life as a collection of citations taken from his own articles published in the journal 'Minjian zongjiao' (volumes 3-5, 1995-1997). Presently, resources are organised under 20 different subject categories that include topics as diverse as folklore, deities, gender issues, and rituals. These categories include three local studies sections, covering Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the mainland. Separate year-by-year lists are also given for the most recent publications. Unfortunately, the site currently lacks any internal search facility. Despite this, researchers at all levels and in every subset of religious studies in the east are likely to find this resource valuable. |

Buddhism in Europe: an annotated bibliography
|
Description |
'Buddhism in Europe: an Annotated Bibliography' is an online resource by noted Buddhist scholar, Professor Martin Baumann. The current edition is the third since 1996 and includes around ninety new titles, making it a useful current resource for researchers in religion, history and related areas at all levels. The bibliography is divided into four sections: General overviews and surveys; Geographical Studies; Added titles since January 1988; Table of estimated numbers of Buddhists in European countries in 2000. The material included is focused on scholarly studies considering the development of Buddhism and Buddhist-activities from both a historical and contemporary perspective. Academic books and articles, theses and journals by national Buddhist organisations of individual countries are covered. As this is a developing resource, suggestions for additions are welcomed. A large proportion of the entries have a short review by Martin Baumann, Ian Harris, Russell Web, Alioune Kone or Lionel Obadia. The bibliography is accessed as a simple scroll-down page and, aside from being rather long for this presentation, is very straightforward to use. |

Buddhist religion: bibliography
|
Producer |
San Diego State University |
|
Description |
As part of publishing one of the standard textbooks in the field, the 4th edition of Richard H. Robinson and Willard L. Johnson's The Buddhist Religion, the suggested readings section was put online and remains a useful if slightly dated bibliography of resources for Buddhist studies. The directory is conveniently divided into a number of sections, including works on the Buddha, Buddhist texts, Buddhism in different countries, and various forms of Buddhism. There are also references to general works, and to other bibliographies of Buddhism. The authors include a brief introductory discussion of the various issues surrounding the compilation of the bibliography, and the putative distinction between religious and scholarly texts. The site is clearly presented and easy to use. It would be of value to both students and scholars seeking texts in specific areas of Buddhism and Buddhist studies. |

Most texts are accessible in English; some sources are given in both Latin and English, and a few are in other languages. This site also contains a short list of printed Catholic writings, although as the author states himself, many of these are now out of print. Christian classics ethereal library (CCEL) |
|
Description |
The Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL) is one of the largest and best online collections of Christian theological and spiritual works. Directed by Harry Plantinga at Calvin College, the library contains an immense assortment of electronic texts ranging from the earliest of Christian theologians through to 19th century authors. Notable offerings include: the complete Early Church Fathers series (all thirty-eight volumes of the Ante-Nicene, Nicene, and Post-Nicene Fathers are available); the works of St Thomas Aquinas (English translations of the Summa Theologica and Catena Aurea are available); and a selection of works by Anselm, Dante, Walter Hilton, St John of the Cross, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Foxe, John Wesley, and many others. The works are available in a variety of formats, and may be either read online or downloaded (downloading requires free registration). The site may be browsed by author, title, or subject, and a search engine is also provided. There are also occasional links to texts hosted off-site. Most of the texts offered by CCEL are in English (though users should note that copyright considerations mean that translations are often some decades old); a few are also in other languages. Many works on the site have been encoded in Theological Markup Language (ThML), which provides special support for theological needs such as scripture references and Strong's numberings. Music students and lovers of church hymns may enjoy perusing the Hymnary, organised both by song title and composer. In many cases it is possible both to download the score for a hymn and to listen to a MIDI file. A valuable resource for scholars and students alike. |

In Birmingham: With an estimated 2,000,000 items, this is by far the largest collection in the University Library. It has been received in instalments from 1979, and papers from the Society's foundation in 1799 up to 1949 are currently open for scholarly study. The collection is a rich source of information not only for ecclesiastical history and missiology but also for the secular history and anthropology of the many countries, particularly in Asia and Africa, in which the Society has operated. Included are records of the Society's home administration (minute books, ledgers, correspondence and publications) and of the work of individual missions, amongst them letters and diaries kept by missionaries. Over the years the Society has absorbed three other missionary societies, and their archives too now form part of the collection in the University Library; they are the Church of England Zenana Missionary Society (founded 1880), the Female Education Society (founded 1834), and the Loochoo Naval Mission (founded 1843). In Oxford: Although the main archive collection is held in Birmingham there are many archival resources that may be consulted in Oxford: • A full set of the archive catalogues for the Birmingham collection • Microfilms of the Archive collection (approximately 2/3 of the collection has now been filmed by Adam Matthews Publications and is available for viewing ) South American Mission Society archive: There is some important archive material, including photographic material, minute books, diaries (including those of the founder of SAMS, Captain Allen F Gardiner RN, most notably his final one found by his body in Tierra del Fuego in 1852), and a full set of the Society's magazine (now known as Share) from its inception in 1867. Microform Academic Publishers hold a set of 17 reels of microfilm containing 'Records from the archive of the South American Missionary Society'. This includes most of the material up to 1919, including the journals of Allen Gardiner, Edward Bernau and Adolfo Henriksen, General Committee Minutes from 1844 and the Society's magazine. |

The Dictionary of African Christian Biography (DACB) |
|
Description |
The Dictionary of African Christian Biography (DACB) is a free online reference resource aiming to record the untold stories of African Christians who have impacted the history of the African church, and of Christianity more widely. Presented as an electronic database browsable by name of subject or region, it covers all denominations and branches of African Christianity, including the missionary movement, from earliest times to the present. The DACB aims to foster an understanding of African Christianity in its own right, as something more than simply a footnote to the story of the faith in Europe. Versions of the site are available in English, French, Portuguese, and Swahili. The Dictionary is a work in progress, but it already offers a considerable quantity of interesting material. |

Digital Quaker collection |
|
Description |
The Digital Quaker Collection at the Earlham School of Religion is an online digital library containing the full text and page images of over 500 individual Quaker works from the 17th and 18th centuries. The site's organisers write: "The theological and organizational biases of Quakers have historically inhibited the production of systematic presentations on theological topics. As a result, the great wealth of Quaker thinking is contained in primary materials such as journals, epistles, and monographs." As a result, many of the volumes held by the School of Religion and available via this digitised project are rare and/or hard to locate. All of these texts are freely accessible via this excellent website; a fairly comprehensive bibliography and a page of links to related resources are also included. Made possible by a large grant from the Arthur Vinings Davis Foundations, the site is well-presented and easy to navigate. |

Early Christian writings |
|
Description |
'Early Christian Writings' provides online access to more than a hundred documents on early Christianity. General introductory information about the text or author is given, along with links to or details of online and/or print copies of the works in question, plus resources related to them where available. Some of the works linked to are hosted on the Early Christian Writings site itself, others are located off-site. Most of the works are in English translation, though for some a version of the text in the original language is provided. This collection includes the New Testament, Gnostic works, Apocrypha, a sub-site on theories about the historical Jesus, and a selection of texts by earlier Church Fathers, including Ignatius, Polycarp, and Clement. The focus is not just on works written by Christians, as pagan authors such as Pliny the Younger, Suetonius and Tacitus are to be found in this resource as well. This site also contains a list of recommended online books. An extensive and valuable resource for those interested in patristic theology. |

|
Title |
EarlyChurch.org.uk |
|
Description |
The early Church website covers the history of the Church from its foundation until c.600 CE. This site is a bibliographic guide listing primary and secondary sources by topic. Topics include: the Bible; councils; heresies and sects; famous individuals within the Church (listed alphabetically); ecclesiastical history; philosophy (Aristotle, Plato, Neo-Platonism, Cynicism, Epicureanism and Stoicism); and study aids. The inclusion of non-Christian philosophy means that the coverage period actually dates back to the fifth century BCE, and thus provides a useful bibliography for students of (Classical) philosophy as well as those studying early Christianity. There, are, however, no accompanying descriptions of the books, but given the extensiveness of the lists, this is understandable. The site is maintained by Robert Bradshaw, who has a Cambridge diploma in religious studies from Mattersey Hall (Assemblies of God Bible College). |

Gifford lectures
|
Producer |
Templeton Foundation Press |
|
Description |
The Gifford Lectures website offers an online database of books derived from the prestigious lecture series of the same name. Since 1888, lectures have been delivered at four Scottish universities (Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, and St. Andrews) on the subject of natural theology (that is, the part of theology that depends on human observation and reasoning rather than on divine revelation). The subject has been interpreted broadly, and topics covered include: anthropological religion; science and religion; agnosticism; religious experience; faith; and religious epistemology. The site offers details of each series of lectures, including the title, an abstract, and a biography of the lecturer. Most Gifford lecture series gave rise to books, and the site offers searchable full text versions of over a hundred volumes (though older works are more likely to be available than newer ones, presumably for reasons relating to copyright). With authors including Emil Brunner, Rudolf Bultmann, John Macquarrie, and Richard Swinburne, this is a valuable resource for theologians and philosophers of religion. Period: 19th Century; 20th Century (1900 - 1945); 20th Century (1946 - 1999); 2000 – present. |

Innu Nation
|
Description |
The Innu Nation website provides a selection of information about the Innu people, the indigenous inhabitants of Nitassinan, an area in eastern Quebec and Labrador, Canada. For those interested in indigenous peoples and the modern impact of European settlement in Canada, this site brings together a reasonable collection of material on the social and economic issues that have affected their recent history. The section entitled Innu History and Culture contains a variety of articles, ethnographic reports, stories, and myth translations would be of value to a wide variety of researchers including students, historians, ethnologists, anthropologists and sociologists. There is a substantial section on Innu spirituality. Those interested in researching the subject further may find the bibliography (under the heading References) useful. While the information here may be of use to scholars, it should be stressed that the Innu Nation site is not an academic posting, but represents the specific opinions of band members and, in particular, the benefits and disadvantages of the Innu's current relationship with Canada and the Canadian government. Even though many of these opinions are widely shared between the Innu and academics, some positions may be open to contest. The site is straightforward to navigate, although not all the internal links on the front page are functional. |

The photographs reveal the physical influence of missions, visible in mission compounds, churches, and school buildings, as well as the cultural impact of mission teaching, religious practices, and Western technology and fashions. Indigenous peoples' responses to missions and the emergence of indigenous churches are represented, as are views of landscapes, cities, and towns before and in the early stages of modern development. |

Collection description |
The historical images in the International Mission Photography Archive come from Protestant and Catholic missionary collections held at a number of centers in Britain, continental Europe, and North America. The photographs record missionary endeavours and reflect the missionaries' experience of communities and environments abroad. There are examples of the physical influence the mission presence brought -- mission compounds, church and school buildings -- as well as examples of the cultural impact of mission teaching and Western influence, including schools and training programs, Christian practices, and Western technology and fashions. The pictures document indigenous peoples' responses to missions and the history of indigenous churches which are often now a major force in society. They also offer views of landscapes, of cities, and of towns before and in the early stages of modern development. Materials from The International Mission Photography collection may be accessed via the USC Digital Library, or via a collection specific gateway available here http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/impa/controller/index.htm" http://digitallibrary.usc.edu/impa/controller/index.htm.
THE MISSION PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE MORAVIAN CHURCH (Evangelische Brüder-Unität) are part of the collection physically housed in the Unitätsarchiv, Herrnhut, Germany (previously German Democratic Republic). The Church was established in 1722 and was the first Protestant missionary society to send its agents to West and South Africa. Digitized photographs from this collection focus on two Missionary fields in Africa: "Nyasa", in what is now southern Tanzania, and "South Africa West", the area north and east of Cape Town. The bulk of these photographs date from the period 1890-1940, with the peak lying in the late 1920s and early 1930s.
THE LEIPZIG MISSION (Evangelisch-Lutherisches Missionswerk Leipzig e.V.), founded in 1836, has been and still is active principally in East Africa, India, and Papua-New Guinea. The archive in Leipzig possesses some 20,000 photos, including about 3,500 from Northeast Tanzania, notably Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Pare. Digitized images from this collection concentrate on the photographs supplied by the missionaries Wilhelm Guth (who worked mainly in Pare, 1913-17 and 1927-38) and Leonhard Blumer (active mainly in Arusha, 1912-13 and 1924-26). In addition a few coloured postcards published by the Mission, probably before World War One, were also digitized.
THE CATHOLIC FOREIGN MISSION SOCIETY OF AMERICA, INC. (Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers) was established in 1911 at Maryknoll, New York and sent its first missionaries to China in 1918. The photographic archive, established to support The Field Afar magazine and later Maryknoll, contains between 1 and 1.5 million prints, lantern slides, glass negatives, and slides that capture mission activities in 38 different countries. The Maryknoll Mission Archives was established as a collaborative venture in 1990 to care for the records and images of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers, Maryknoll Sisters and the Maryknoll Lay Missioners. Digitized images are confined to the China series of images dated 1912-1945.
THE MISSION ARCHIVES OF THE SCHOOL OF MISSION AND THEOLOGY in Stavanger, Norway, contains an extensive, well preserved, and among the best-organized and -catalogued photograph collections in existence. Overall, this collection from the Norwegian Mission Society (Det Norske Misjonsselskap) comprises approximately 100,000 items, including photograph albums, glass plate negatives, and lantern slides, representing regions as diverse as South Africa (Natal and Zululand), Madagascar, China (Hunan, Hong Kong), Cameroon (Adamawa), Japan, Taiwan, and Ethiopia. Digitized images in this collection include pictures from three regions: Madagascar (from the period 1890 to 1920), South Africa (taken between 1866 and 1940), and Cameroon (taken between 1925 and 1950).
THE SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL AND AFRICAN STUDIES (SOAS) digitized a representative sample of images from the 25,000 prints held in the missionary society collections from Africa, China, the Caribbean, Madagascar, South India, and Papua-New Guinea. The photographs come from the collections of the Council for World Mission (formerly the London Missionary Society), the Methodist Missionary Society, and the China Inland Mission (now the Overseas Missionary Fellowship). Some of the photographs were taken by missionary workers in the field, such as the lay mission worker, John Parrett (1841-1918) who served as a printer for the London Missionary Society in Madagascar from 1862 to 1885 and Rev. Harry Moore Dauncey (1863-1932) who served with the L.M.S. in Papua New Guinea, mainly in the Delena district, for forty years from 1888 to 1928. There are also images collected by missionaries whilst overseas, such as the collection of fine albumen prints of China in the early 1860s taken by an unknown Russian photographer.
THE YALE UNIVERSITY DIVINITY SCHOOL DAY MISSIONS LIBRARY'S contributions include photographs of missions-related educational work in China and postcards related to missionary work in Africa. The China photographs represent a selection from the Library's archival and manuscript collections, which include several thousand photographs documenting missionary and educational work in China from the late 19th century to 1950. Photographs in the archives of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia focus on the work of the thirteen colleges and universities founded by Protestant mission agencies in China. Photographs in the personal papers of missionaries, who served under a variety of agencies in numerous provinces, provide a broad-based view of the spectrum of Protestant mission work in China. Medical, educational, and evangelistic endeavours are documented, as well as famine relief, rural reconstruction, athletics, and other aspects of the lives and work of American and British missionaries, and their Chinese students and colleagues. The postcards contributed by Yale document both Protestant and Catholic mission work in Africa, in a variety of countries.
THE MISSION PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE BASEL MISSION collection is a large and outstanding collection of approximately 38,000 photographs of the Evangelische Missionsgesellschaft in Basel, Switzerland, otherwise known as the Basel Mission. This collection portrays the lives of missionaries, both foreign and native, and the lay people from 1850s to 1950s across five continents. But the bulk of photographs cover mainly two states of India, namely Kerala and Karnataka, Hakka-speaking parts of Guangdong Sheng or Canton province of China, Hong Kong, Ghana and Cameroon.
THE MISSION PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE DM-ÉCHANGE ET MISSION collection were taken by Swiss missionaries in South Africa and Mozambique between 1890 and 1950. They are part of a collection of about 10,000 photographs held by DM-échange et mission in Lausanne, Switzerland. These photographs portray the evangelistic, educational and medical work of the Swiss Mission (Mission vaudoise, Mission Suisse romande, Mission suisse dans l’Afrique du Sud) in northeastern South Africa and southern Mozambique. They include portraits of Swiss missionaries and native people, scenes of everyday life, views of landscapes and mission stations and photographs of local fauna and flora.
NATIONAL LIBRARY OF SCOTLAND. Photographs in this collection were selected from the archival and manuscript holdings of the National Library of Scotland.
THE HERMANNSBURG MISSION (Evangelisch-Lutherisches Missionswerk Hermannsburg), is a branch of the Evangelisch-lutherisches Missionswerke (ELM) in Lower Saxony. The archive includes an inventory of photographs from Western and Southwestern Ethiopia dating from the period 1927-1958.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF EMIL MÜLLER, 1893-1933. This is a private collection of glass plates. These photographs were taken in East Africa by a member of the Leipzig Mission, Emil Müller. The digital images were provided by pastor Pfarrer Kecke.
PHOTOGRAPHS OF BIBLIOTHČQUE DU DÉFAP contains the Mission Photographs of the Département évangélique français d’action apostolique, Service Protestant du Mission, Paris.

Internet medieval sourcebook
|
Title |
Internet medieval sourcebook |
|
Description |
This website was founded in 1996 as an online source of medieval texts. Content scope is broad, covering a wide range of medieval studies. The majority of the sources are organized into one of three major categories: selected sources; full-text sources; and saints' lives. Additional categories include selected secondary resources, medieval legal history, and maps and images. The selected sources section offers an index to facilitate finding texts for particular periods or topics, and deals with material dating from the end of the classical world through to the reformation and renaissance. Topics listed include: economic life; the crusades; church history; intellectual life; Jewish life; and sex and gender. The full-text resources are arranged by document type, including: church councils; historiographical works; literary texts; spiritual writings; and legal documents. The saints' lives are presented in broadly chronological order, beginning with the apostolic era and going through to the post-medieval period. Saints of Byzantine, Western European, and Celtic origin are included. The site is part of the Online Reference Book for Medieval Studies project (ORB), developed by Paul Halsall, the ORB sources editor, and located at the Fordham University Center for Medieval Studies. |

Internet theology resources: online theology-related periodicals
|
Producer |
College of St Benedict and St John's University, USA |
|
Description |
Part of Elizabeth T. Knuth's Internet Theology Resources website, the Online Theology-Related Periodicals page provides a list of annotated links to the home pages of electronic journals: both those which appear only on the Web, and those which appear both in print and online. Some of the publications listed offer free full text access, while others provide only abstracts and/or selections to non-subscribers: in most cases, the link annotations indicate how much of the work is available. An indication is often also given of the intended audience of a particular publication - while many are scholarly journals, some works of more general interest are also listed. A helpful reference source for those studying or researching religion and theology. |

Description |
The Methodist Collections Web page provides information about the Methodist Archives and Research Centre (MARC), located in the John Rylands University Library at the University of Manchester. This site's chief function is to describe the library's extensive collection of papers and correspondence from the Wesley family and other prominent evangelists, which is focused primarily on the development of the Methodist movement in the United Kingdom during the 18th century. The contents of the archives are not themselves available online, although the site does offer some useful electronic resources, including an index of Methodist ministers, and a bibliographic index providing brief notes on some 1,300 significant figures. The Online Virtual Library section also offers a large collection of links to relevant material elsewhere on the Web. |

Newbigin.net: online bibliography and documents
|
Producer |
University of Birmingham Newbigin Archives |
|
Description |
Newbigin.net provides an extensive online bibliographic and documentary archive relating to the work of Lesslie Newbigin (1909-1998), a British bishop and theologian whose subject area was the theology of mission. The site's core resource is a bibliographic database of articles and works by Newbigin together with a smaller number about him. As well as standard catalogue data, a substantial number of records link to a full-text version of the article or book. In total there are over 280 works available as PDF files (mostly essays or articles, but also including the text of a number of published books), dating from 1932 onwards. The texts themselves are also searchable. A brief biography of Newbigin is also provided. The site is the result of collaboration between a number of groups, including the Gospel and Our Culture Networks in the UK and North America, the DeepSight Trust of New Zealand, the Council for World Mission (based in the UK), the Newbigin Estate, and the University of Birmingham Newbigin Archives. |

Online Jewish missions history project
|
Title |
Online Jewish missions history project |
|
Description |
The Online Jewish Missions History Project offers a collection of 90 documents relating to Christian missionary activity among Jewish people in North America and the UK in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The documents include newspaper articles (in particular, a large number of pieces from the New York Times) and reports and other publications issued by churches and missionary organisations. The majority are American in origin, with a few from Scotland or London. A significant number of documents relate to the rather turbulent career of Hermann Warszawiak, a Jewish convert to Christianity who himself became a missionary in America. While most of the works accessible through the site are texts (mostly available in both HTML and Word formats), a few images are also included. The documents can be browsed in a number of different ways (by title, creator, date, format, and so forth), and there is a sophisticated search function. This resource is hosted on the website of the Lausanne Consultation on Jewish Evangelism. |

Patrologia Latina
|
Title |
Patrologia Latina |
|
Description |
ProQuest's online edition of Migne's 'Patrologia Latina' is a major resource for scholars working on patristic and medieval theology. The original work was a series of over 200 volumes, first published in the mid-19th century by Jacques-Paul Migne, and contains the entire corpus of Latin Christian writing from around the 3rd century until 1216. The Patrologia Latina Database includes all prefatory material, critical apparatus, and indexes, and offers a full-text search of the entire corpus. However, as the site offers only the Latin originals of the texts, without English translations, this resource is likely to be of most interest to advanced students and researchers. Access to the database requires a subscription. |

The Quaker Archives Database from the University of Leeds Special Collections department is an online index of names from many of the older documents in the University Library's Carlton Hill archive. This archive relates mainly to Quaker records of West and North Yorkshire. Seventy minute books have been indexed; creating a total of almost 40,000 records. A list of the documents which have been indexed for inclusion in the database is available from the site. It is possible to limit searches to particular types of data, for example name, place or meeting. The results can be displayed by name or by meeting. The results provide references to the documents in the archive containing the search terms used. Online help on how to use the database is available from the site, as is a longer guide in PDF format. |

Religion in South Asia: a selected bibliography
|
Description |
This site gives a bibliography of printed materials for the study of religion in South Asia. The site is divided into nine different sections: eight giving resources available for Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism and one final section which features works in which two or more of these religions are compared. The list is not at all comprehensive, but determinedly selective. Entries have, on the whole, been quite stringently assessed before inclusion using book reviews, other bibliographies and the 'World bibliographical' series. The bibliography is further restricted based on the holdings of the various libraries at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is, however, a worthwhile list and useful for anyone studying the religions of South Asia. |

Religion-online.org
|
Title |
Religion-online.org |
|
Description |
Developed by William Fore (United Theological College, Bangalore, India) in order to make religious resources more available to students in developing countries, the vast Religion-online.org now stands as one of the larger collections of Christian primary texts available anywhere on the web. At present the site holds in excess of 6,000 documents, with material organised under a series of topical headings and then broken down into specific issues, thinkers or themes, all of which are readily accessed by clicking on a sub-category or using the index. The site is especially strong in documents written by and concerning 19th and 20th century theologians; contemporary moral and ethical issues; modern practical theology and theological movements; and contemporary mainstream Christian denominations. If anything, the greatest hindrance to using this site is also its chief advantage - the size and breadth of resources. It is sometimes difficult to locate specific texts so users searching for a well-defined topic are strongly advised to make use of the in-built search facility or the Author Index. |

Religious studies Web guide: bibliographies on the Net
|
Producer |
University of Calgary |
|
Description |
The Bibliographies on the Net page of Saundra Lipton's Religious Studies Web Guide offers a partially annotated list of links to several hundred online bibliographies relevant to the academic study of religion. The links are categorised according to religious tradition or topic: there are sections for all major world faiths, and for biblical studies and women and religion. The list also includes a section for general religious studies bibliographies, and one for more eclectic topics that aren't easily categorised, including alchemical books, new religious movements, and religious scepticism. It is almost inevitable that a list of this length will include some broken links, but the volume of material covered means this is only a minor inconvenience. |

Description |
Septuagint.org is an online tool which may be of use to those studying or aspiring to study either the Septuagint (Greek translation of the Old Testament) or the Greek New Testament. The site offers complete versions of both these texts, and hovering the mouse pointer over a word reveals parsing information (that is, the case, number, gender, tense, and so forth). Translations are not provided, but the dictionary form of each word is given to aid users in recognising unfamiliar forms, or if necessary to facilitate looking the word up. Description |
'Summa Theologica' is an online version of St Thomas Aquinas's (c.1225-1274) influential 13th century treatise on theology and philosophy. The copy text is the 1920 revised edition translated by the Fathers of the English Dominican Province. The online version has benefited from the addition of links between the various sections, as well as to encyclopaedia entries. The parent site, New Advent, is the work of a Catholic layman. The resource is freely accessible, but does display advertisements around its borders. Theologians and those studying medieval philosophy should find the site of interest. |

Description |
Theopedia is a website using wiki technology to create an encyclopaedia of Christianity and biblical theology. As is usual with wikis, registered users are encouraged to add or edit articles. Founded in 2004, the site has a substantial number of active participants and is growing steadily. Theopedia locates itself within the Reformed theology tradition: an explanation of this position is provided, along with a statement of faith, a writing guide, and help pages for potential contributors. In addition to written articles, the site also provides links to a substantial collection of multimedia resources (some of which may require plug-ins). The site is fully searchable, with a useful list of key topics on the front page and numerous hyperlinks between articles to aid navigation. |

Description |
The Wabash Center Internet Guide to Religion is a selective, annotated guide to a wide variety of electronic resources of interest to those who are involved in the study and practice of religion and theology. Included on the site are links to: syllabi; electronic texts and journals; bibliographies; listserv discussion groups; liturgies; reference resources; software; and much more. The guide aims to encourage and facilitate the use of electronic resources in teaching. For this reason, the site also includes links to materials on political and social issues - such as abortion, capital punishment and September 11 - which bear on religious questions. |
